GCBOE Makes School Closure Consolidation Decision

GCBOE Makes School Closure Consolidation Decision
At its regular Board meeting on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the Granville County Board of Education voted to close Wilton Elementary School. They also approved new attendance zones for GCPS traditional elementary schools. These changes will be effective with the 2026-2027 school year.
This action follows extensive research and analysis of a wide variety of information and data. The Board weighed information included in two separate formal studies and input from stakeholders, including opinions provided at a recent public hearing held on November 18, 2025.
Following this decision, the Board approved a student reassignment plan based on new attendance zones and a staff reassignment plan that includes a timeline for staff notification. At a future meeting, the Board will discuss the development of a facility transition plan with specific tasks for relocation of furniture, equipment, and supplies.
Board Chair Vickie Baker stated, “This was not an easy decision, and it was not made lightly. After careful review of our budget realities, enrollment trends, and the long-term needs of our students, the board determined that this action was necessary to protect the quality of education across our district. Our focus now is on supporting students, families, and staff through this transition and ensuring every child continues to receive a safe, stable, and high-quality learning environment.”
Dr. Stan Winborne, Superintendent of GCPS, had this to share: "I know that these recent school consolidation decisions will be painful for many families and staff. Please know we are committed to making sure everyone in our communities receives timely and accurate information during this process. It is our hope that we can focus forward, building upon the strong positive trends made during the past two years. We want our schools to be a point of pride for every family in Granville County."
The Board of Education and GCPS senior administration will share progress and updates with all stakeholders at future Board of Education meetings.
